When it comes to helping the environment, every little bit helps. Making your home eco-friendly is a great way to start. A one-time fix or a small change in your usual routine can go a long way in reducing your home’s carbon footprint.

  • Swap regular lightbulbs to LED bulbs. When compared to incandescent lightbulbs, LED bulbs use 75 percent less energy, making them ultra-energy efficient. They also last a lot longer, so you will have to replace them less frequently, which is good news for the environment.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water. Unless you are dealing with tough dirt or items covered in germs, stick with cold water when you do laundry. Not only will you save energy by not having to heat the water, but clothes also washed in cold water last longer, meaning you will not have to replace them as often. They are also less prone to wrinkles, so you can save energy by not having to iron as much.
  • Keep your dryer vent pipe clean. A dryer vent pipe full of lint and debris will increase the length of time it takes for a load of laundry to be fully dried. Cut back on the energy needed to dry a load of laundry by cleaning your vent pipes cleaned at least once a year by yourself or by a professional.
  • Utilize curtains and blinds to control your home’s temperature. Rather than relying on your thermostat to heat and cool your house, regulate the temperature with your window coverings. Invest in thermal-lined curtains or insulated cellular shades to save energy.
  • Recycle the right way. Rules for how and what to recycle have changed quite a bit in the past few years. Investigate your county’s recycling guidelines and make sure you only recycle items that are accepted. Try to reuse items that cannot be recycled.
  • Grow a garden. Creating a garden not only helps your home look nice, but also helps the Earth as well. Plants absorb carbon dioxide, play a key role in regulating the water cycle and provide protection and shelter for animals.
